Live captioning or CART captioning (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is the instantaneous conversion of the spoken word into the written word. Text is transmitted within seconds of the spoken word. This service can be provided on-site as well as remotely.
Live captioning is the process of transcribing spoken words into text in real time, allowing people to read along as they listen to or watch. This service is particularly useful for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, but it can also benefit people in noisy environments, those learning a new language, or anyone who prefers reading to listening.
Live real-time captioning and CART can be provided for meetings, classes, training sessions, and events of all kinds to name a few.
Remote captioning is the same, except that the caption provider is in a remote location and receives audio through the use of a telephone or internet connection platform.
Automatic Speech Recognition – ASR or AI captioning is an alternative to a human caption provider. ASR is a more economical option but may not be ADA compliant unless properly implemented. (See our Caption Companion solution!)

Open captioning refers to captions that are visible to all by default and can’t be turned off or disabled. For example, live captioning at a convention that appears either overlaid on the presentation slides or on a separate screen dedicated only to the live captioning for all in attendance to see. Another example would be a webinar or virtual event that broadcasts the captioning on the screen as part of the video feed to remote attendees.
Closed captioning refers to captions that can be turned on/off. For example, enabling the captions on a TV or clicking the CC button in a virtual meeting. Another example would be providing a small caption screen or handheld device only to the individuals at a convention who request the service.
CART provides live captioning services for accessibility during events.
